Saturday School Story

Can’t hold to write about my Saturday school which is going to be closed. I never thought that I would be this sad. Sadness, imagining how is my little students’ reactions when they know that they will no longer have Saturday activities with their teacher anymore. Sadness, because I probably never see them anymore. Who knows about their future. Some of them are unfortunate children, who have no parents to take care of them, some again have parents separated  from them. I am longing to give care to those children, happy to see their happy faces and smile.

I started to teach this Saturday Bible school since 2010, after I finished my master’s study. Never thought that I will end up as a Sunday School teacher, since I never teached before. I tried to learn to speak in front of little children, tried not to be nervous. Those kids are so smart, I think smarter than the old generation.

Children grow up so fast. Some of them have left, because they are no longer kids. Some are still growing older. Many things have happened. We did various kind of activities, making art and handcrafts, singing, playing, listen carefully to bible stories. All at the same time.

By the end of this month, this Saturday school will be officially closed. I have to say goodbye to my little children. I can’t believe that this happens before I leave to Aussie Land. I tried to give my best, but I know God knows the best for those little children. Because Jesus loves the little children.. all the children of the world. So long Lil Children, auf wiedersehen.

Saturday Students

Here is what my activities look like every Saturday: singing, teaching, and telling bible stories for children in Kindergarten and Elementary School. All brings out another excitement in every new lesson, but the most fun part is the kids’ activities. This time, after several months, my students finally finished their projects on making Scrapbook Photo album.

To make this, you just simply follow these steps:

1. Collect an old calendar.

2. Cover the paper inside the calendar with colored paper.

3. Décor inside the colored paper with stickers, ribbons, or personalized cut out paper.

4. Attach your pictures.

5. Put title for every pictures, and don’t forget to give names in front of your album.

And these are how they look like, little students with their artworks 🙂

Night Market – Pasar Malam Tjap Toendjoengan

Just want to share about night life activities which is arranged for a month, celebrating anniversary of City of Surabaya. This nigh market is located in East Coast Center of Surabaya, has a lot of local or non local visitors. Besides music or other stage performance, there are various kinds of local food and vendors: Rujak Cingur, Gado-Gado, Bubur Ayam, Kacang Kowa, Baso, Nasi Bebek, Pempek Palembang, Spiral Potatoes, Fried Rice, Sate Ayam, Otak-Otak, Batagor, and many other types. Choice of drinks are also many, from local tea, jamu, es campur, kacang hijau, etc. Besides food and beverages, there are services for people, such as: figure sketching, photo corner, clothes selling, and kids playing spots.

This shows that the citizens need a place for gathering, having social interactions, with many kind of activities they can choose. The public space should provide convenience, choice, opportunities generation, sensory qualities, and quality of space and time. This can sustain through time, when people can actively participate into such public space.

Architectural Design by my students

After so much writing about my travel, now it is my turn to write back into my campus life. These are works of my students during  the last semester in 2012. I wish that the results could be better, but as of now this is the best that they can do. I understand that most of my students were busy involved in the university activities, such as preparing for photographic and sketch exhibition, etc. Though not all of them were involved, but the activities at campus did not support academic activities in class.

For next semester, I hope that all of the students will learn much more and can do better than they did at this semester. For all of you who had participated in the class, the assistants, the students, thank you 🙂
